Research interests
Scientific interests and activities are related with the immunological characteristic of the allergens and their mechanism of action in human organism; the allergen specific diagnosis and immunotherapy/vaccination; the effect of air pollution (outdoor and indoor) and drug abuse on immune system and allergization; the methods and mechanism of immunostimulation and a preparation and study different polybacterial immunostimulants.
Main scientific achievements
Founded in 1963 the first Laboratory of allergy in Bulgaria manufacturing more than 200 allergen preparations for specific diagnosis and immunotherapy of the allergic diseases, largely used in the clinical practice and introduce them for specific diagnosis and immunotherapy and by this way he get the start of the contemporary development of the clinical allergology in this country. Original are the data about the double mechanism of action of the atopic allergens — biochemical related with consumption of human complement and immunological — related with stimulation of allergen specific IgE antibodies. For the first time are studied the immunological changes and the level of allergisation in drug abusers. Very active research and clinical work is realized in the study of polybacterial immunostimulants and is proved their effectiveness in stimulation of innate immune mechanisms. On the basis of this study are created and approved by the national and European drug authorities the series of medical preparations for stimulation of the immunocompetent cells in different systems — so called Respivax, Urostim, Dentavax.
Publications
He has published more than 200 articles and 8 monographs. He has 14 patents approved by the National Patent Administration, which are introduced in the laboratory and clinical practice.
Tutor’s activity
Tutor of 2 DSc and 8 PhD fellows successfully defended their thesis.
Awards
Prof. Petrunov is granted with many national and international honorable awards and medals in recognition for his outstanding professional and scientific contributions. Some of them are international: a honorable member of the International Society of Immunorehabilitation; the Cuban Society of Allergology; the Georgian Association of Allergology and Clinical Immunology; he received the order «Ordine della stella solidarieta’ Italiana» by the President of the Italian Republic, he is declared as a «Man of the Year» by the American Biographical Institute.
