The study of the persistence of microorganisms made it possible to develop the theoretical foundations of microbial persistence (survival), clarify the mechanisms of this phenomenon, and determine the key function of peptidoglycan in bacterial persistence. Previously unknown factors of bacterial persistence have been discovered, the principle of ecological determination of the persistent characteristics of microbes has been formulated, the concept of “persistent potential” of microorganisms has been introduced, which has improved the quality of treatment and prevention of a number of infections and bacterial carrier state. It was determined that the persistent potential of microbes is a “biological target” for studying the regulation of their biocommunicative interactions.

The use of the symbiotic approach in the study of infectological mechanisms contributed to the creation of a new direction, “Infectious symbiology,” where the infection is described as a model of the system of associative symbiosis with its three-vector structure. A method of intermicrobial recognition of "friend or foe" has been developed, which contributed to reconsideration of the role of bifidoflora in the human body. Bifidobacteria was shown to be a key element in protecting the body against infection, due to the ability of bifidoflora to discriminate foreign material (pathogenic bacteria), followed by initial “signaling” in the regulation of intestinal immune homeostasis. The developed method of inter-microbial recognition of "friend or foe" turned out to be very universal and made it possible to clearly implement the principle of biocompatibility of strains of microorganisms, which is important for the synbiotic composition.
