Biography
In 1976, he graduated from the 1st Moscow medical Institute named after I.M. Sechenov, then worked at the research Institute of Virology named after D.I. Ivanovsky (scientific supervisors — academician of the USSR Academy of medical Sciences V.M. Zhdanov, Professor V.A. Ananyev), where he went from a senior laboratory assistant to a senior researcher.
From 1980 to 2005 — head of the indication laboratory of the N.F. Gamaleya Research Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology.
In 1996, he was awarded the academic title of Professor.
At the Institute of Polio and Viral Encephalitis named after M.P. Chumakov, he went from the Head of the Department of viral hepatitis (part-time), Deputy Director for research to Director of the Institute (from 2006 to 2016).
Since 2009 — Head of the Department of Microbiology and Virology of the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia.
In 2011, he was elected a corresponding member of the RAMS.
In 2014, he became a corresponding member of the RAS (as part of the RAMS and RASKHN joining the RAS).
In 2006-2016, director of Chumakov Institute of Poliomyelitis and Viral Encephalitis, RAMS.
Research interests
Study of the epidemiology of viral hepatitis. The main patterns of the circulation of hepatitis A, B, C, D, E viruses were determined. The first domestic plasma derived vaccine against hepatitis B was developed. The tactics of using hepatitis A and B vaccines were developed. Priority data on hepatitis E as a zoonosis and molecular epidemiology of hepatitis B, C, D and E were оbtained.
Main scientific achievements
- Developed technologies of hepatitis В, С, D markers detection for Russian diagnostic assays;
- Development of Federal control system for viral laboratory diagnostic of viral hepatitis;
- Development of Russian plasma-derived hepatitis B vaccine;
- Investigation of the prevalence of viral hepatitis in different regions and populations, including minor ethnicities, populated in Yakutiya, Tyva, Pamir;
- The change in dominating routes of transmission of hepatitis B virus and its distribution in different age groups during high increase of hepatitis B incidence in 1996-2001 was revealed. Data obtained permitted to confirm the necessity of mass hepatitis B vaccination of adolescents for effective decrease of hepatitis B incidence;
- Revealed epidemiological factors underling hepatitis B and C high risk groups formation (intravenous drug users, tuberculosis patients, patients with oncological disease, sexually transmitted infections, hemodialysis patients);
- Priority data concerning sexual route of transmission of hepatitis C virus have been obtained, that was acknowledged in world and European congresses for sexually transmitted infections;
- Data obtained concerning effectiveness of hepatitis A and B immunization formed the basis for current tactics for vaccination against these infections in Russian Federation;
- Development and organization of regional hepatitis A and B vaccination programs in Russian Federation;
- New data concerning hepatitis E as a zoonotic infection in non-endemic regions have been obtained: detection and characterization of hepatitis E virus isolates from wild and farm animals (pigs) in Russia.
Author of more than 300 publications, including 9 monographs, 1 textbook, as well as 7 copyright certificates and 2 patents for invention.
Under his supervision, 7 doctoral and 30 PhD theses were defended.
