Information on the geographical distribution of different species of the <italic>Borrelia burgdorferi</italic> sensu lato (<italic>B. burgdorferi</italic> s.l.) complex is of great epidemiological importance, since different genospecies are associated with certain clinical manifestations of Lyme borreliosis. Although Almaty region of the Republic of Kazakhstan is considered to be endemic for tick-borne borreliosis, there is still no accurate data on the level of borrelia infection in ticks in the region, including information on the genotypes of circulating borrelia.</p> <p><bold>The aim</bold> of this work was to study ticks collected from humans in the Almaty region of the Republic of Kazakhstan in 2018.</p> <p><bold>Materials and methods</bold>. Ticks were tested for the presence of <italic>B. burgdorferi</italic> s.l. DNA, genotyping of the identified borrelia was done by sequencing of the fragment of 16S rRNA gene. The analysis of epidemiological data on the incidence of Lyme borreliosis in the Almaty region in 2013–2018 was performed.</p> <p><bold>Results</bold>. <italic>Rhipicephalus turanicus</italic> (116/253), <italic>Haemaphysalis punctata</italic> (74/253), <italic>Dermacentor marginatus</italic> (28/253), and <italic>Ixodes persulcatus</italic> (23/253) were the predominant species of ticks taken from humans. The prevalence of <italic>B. burgdorferi</italic> s.l. infection in <italic>I. persulcatus</italic> ticks was 39.13% (9/23) It should be noted that the DNA of <italic>B. burgdorferi</italic> s.l. was also detected in single individuals of <italic>D. marginatus</italic>, <italic>H. punctata</italic>, and <italic>R. turanicus</italic>, although these species are not considered as competent <italic>B. burgdorferi</italic> s.l. vectors.</p> <p><bold>Conclusion</bold>. As a result of sequencing of the positive homogenates of ticks, two genotypes of B. burgdorferi s.l. were identified: <italic>B. afzelii</italic> and <italic>B. garinii</italic> and/or <italic>B. bavariensis</italic>. Thus, at least two genospecies, <italic>B. afzelii</italic> and <italic>B. garinii</italic> and/or <italic>B. bavariensis</italic>, circulate in the territory of the Almaty region.</p></abstract><trans-abstract xml:lang="ru"><p><bold>Введение</bold>. Информация о географическом распространении различных видов комплекса Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (<italic>B. burgdorferi</italic> s.l.) имеет важное эпидемиологическое значение, поскольку различные геновиды связаны с определенными клиническими проявлениями Лайм-боррелиоза. Алматинская область Республики Казахстан считается эндемичной по клещевому боррелиозу, однако точная информация об уровне зараженности боррелиями клещей, обитающих в области, включая информацию о генотипах циркулирующих боррелий, отсутствует.</p> <p><bold>Целью</bold> данной работы было исследование клещей, снятых с людей в Алматинской области Республики Казахстан в 2018 г.</p> <p><bold>Материалы и методы</bold>. Клещей (n = 253) изучали на содержание в них ДНК <italic>B. burgdorferi</italic> s.l., генотипирование выявленных боррелий по участку гена 16S рРНК осуществляли методом секвенирования. Проведен анализ эпидемиологических данных по заболеваемости Лайм-боррелиозом в Алматинской области за 2013–2018 гг.</p> <p><bold>Результаты</bold>. Превалирующими видами клещей, снятых с людей, оказались <italic>Rhipicephalus turanicus</italic> (n = 116), <italic>Haemaphysalis punctata</italic> (n = 74), <italic>Dermacentor marginatus</italic> (n = 28) и <italic>Ixodes persulcatus</italic> (n = 23). Уровень зараженности клещей <italic>I. persulcatus</italic> бактериями <italic>B. burgdorferi</italic> s.l. составил 39,13% (n = 9). ДНК <italic>B. burgdorferi</italic> s.l. также была детектирована в единичных особях <italic>D. marginatus</italic>, <italic>H. punctata</italic> и <italic>R. turanicus</italic>, хотя данные виды не являются компетентными векторами <italic>B. burgdorferi</italic> s.l. В результате секвенирования положительных гомогенатов клещей были идентифицированы два генотипа <italic>B. burgdorferi</italic> s.l.: <italic>B. afzelii</italic> и <italic>B. garinii</italic> и/или <italic>B. bavariensis</italic>.</p> <p><bold>Выводы</bold>.
